For The Love of Pie!!

Ahhh, we love the smell of pie in the morning. And' afternoon. And evening ;) Your humble little pie shop is at it again, being featured on 'For The Love of Pie!' a Cooking Channel show debuting this evening. Check your local listings for time & channel and tune in...you won't wanna miss this!

Taken from The Cooking Channel Website:

The pie craze is sweeping the nation and the Cooking Channel is out to showcase it! The belief that "pies are the next cupcakes" is gaining momentum. Part of that sentiment is based on pie/cupcake similarities. Both are classic desserts with comforting associations that are great for virtually any occasion. But pies have the added benefit of regional distinction. Call it a road trip, call it an obsession, but we will crisscross the country "FOR THE LOVE OF PIE!"

Thursday, November 10, 2011

Blitz! Arts Walk TONIGHT!!

Come see the amazing local artist Syniva Whitney from 7-8pm at High 5 tonight! She will be installing sculpture and showing her short film, Shot Day. Rumors of a performance remain unconfirmed, ;)
Come see amazing art, have delicious pie and good coffee and stay for a discussion at the round table with the artist from 7:30-8.

We love this website and are so proud to be part of it. The lovely folks over at iFood.tv shared with us a post they put up about the new High 5 Pie cookbook, Cutie Pies, and some info about our amazing and fearless leader, Dani, and we just couldn't resist sharing it with you!

Start with the Cutie Pies profile but don't stop there! We highly recommend bookmarking their website and checking it often as it is truly a little slice of foodie heaven.

Come out and commemorate friends and loved ones lost or struggling with breast cancer. Powerhouse of AWESOME, Dani Cone on Martha Stewart!?!?!

OCTOBER 3, 2011! Live on Martha Stewart!

Yes folks, that's right. Our intrepid leader, business woman extraordinaire, and author of the new cook book Cutie Pies will be a guest on the Martha Stewart show on Monday October 3rd. What will happen!? I'm not sure yet! But I can hazard a guess that it will have to do with pie. Delicious, buttery pie. Stay tuned for updates as we find out more! In the meantime, program your tivo or your dvr or your tiny future computer phone to record or remind you of this momentous event.

Eat Pie, Drink Coffee, Save Lives

Fuel Coffee and High 5 Pie “Fuel theCure”

A Portion of Proceeds from Fuel and High 5 Pie for the month of October will go to the Susan G. Komen Fund

High 5 Pie and Fuel Coffee will donate a portion of all proceeds for the month of October to the Susan G. Komen Fund as part of High 5 Pie and Fuel Coffee’s “Fuel the Cure” campaign to support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. High 5 Pie’s Capitol Hill location will feature pink-framed storefront windows to commemorate the occasion.

We are all working towards and looking forward to a day when breast cancer is spoken of only in the past tense. It has touched too many lives and stolen our mothers, daughters, wives, aunts, sisters, friends, family. But we stand in celebration of their lives and in support of each brave survivor.

This year, we are asking people to “share, celebrate and take action”by coming to High 5 Pie to post photos, memories, and notes in the pink window frames in honor of anyone that has been affected by breast cancer.

In September of 2007, we lost our dear friend Noelle, just a month before her 41st birthday. To try to speak of Noelle's memory seems odd, almost unfair, because she was too big to be relegated to memory, too big to be gone, and too full of life to have had it taken from her. What keeps us dedicated and re-dedicated to this cause is the fact that maybe we can fight this so that one day no one will have to know thisheartache.

Fuel the CureKickoff: Friday, Sept. 30, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. – stop by High 5 Pie with pictures, memories or notes to share, celebrate and take action.

Artist Talk and Happy Hour at High 5 Pie

Come to the first Happy Hour Artist Talk at High 5 Pie as a part of BLITZ! Capitol Hill Arts Walk, Thursday 9/8 from 6-7 at the community round table.

Art+Pie=Yummy for brain and tummy.

Sayward Schoonmaker: talks: Static Companions

Schoonmaker will discuss her process in terms of staring time and luck--a kind of static companion--perpetually present, both stationary and buzzing. She will embark on a meandering talk and invite participants to make some chance poetry along the way.

Sayward Schoonmaker is a Chicago-based artist and poet. Her work most often begins as a witness to intimacy, her own, between strangers, with objects, in narrative, and the decision to examine it in language. She regards the intimate as a swoon with the synchronous-- a momentary confluence of history, place, and emotion.

Gene Simmons, where art thou?

So, it's a little known secret that we're just a tad obsessed with Gene Simmons and KISS. I mean come on! The music? The videos? The awesomely bad hair??! How can you not love these guys!

He *might* be a bit more obsessed than we are.

So unless you've been living under a rock, you know that KISS will be coming to town Thursday June 23rd. Well, technically they'll be playing in Everett, but we won't let that dampen our spirits! How awesome would it be, I ask you, to have Mr. Simmons drop in at our humble little pie shop on the hill? Pretty freaking awesome! Which is why we are sending out good and positive vibes, keeping our fingers crossed and pretty much telling anyone who will listen that he has to be coming by...he just HAS to!

So help us out! Whenever you send out a tweet, use the hashtag #High5KISSWish and feel free to convince Mr. Simmons that he would be missing out if he didn't drop in at High 5 Pie. Or, you're friends with him and you feel like helping us out by giving him a call, then that is just fine too! We'll take what we can get ;) Let's do this, people!

Make it happen and we'll totally rock these boots in the kitchen.

Mix it up! Shake it up! Whooaaaa ohhhh ohh!!

Man oh man, what a great time we're having over here at High 5! We've enjoyed a lot of things in the last couple of months. Making our Cooking Channel debut on Unique Sweets, mentioned in Sunset Magazine for our pie pops and jars (and doubly exciting, Fuel Coffee had a great mention as well!), People Magazine featured our uber tasty Raspberry Chocolate Mint Whip pie, The Food Network paid us a visit...I could go on but I think you get the idea ;) Great things are happening here and we are having a ton of fun doing what we do best, making our pies with lots of love and sharing them with you!

So now as we turn the corner of Spring and head towards Summer, albeit slowly but surely, we want to share with all of you pie lovers the next best thing in our world. Are you ready for it? Say it with me:

PIE SHAKES!!!

Mhmm, you are reading this right! Pie shakes have made their debut in our shop just in time for summer and we are oh so stoked about our newest creations. Who doesn't love a slice of pie with a scoop of ice cream on top? Well, we took that idea one step further and threw those 2 things in a blender, added a bit of milk and instantly fell in love with what is sure to be one of the best treats during the upcoming Seattle summer.

Seriously. A peanut butter and jelly pie shake? Count us in!

To make these delectable treats we use the amazing Bluebird ice cream in either Snickerdoodle or Vanilla Bean, a bit of milk and a slice of pie of your choosing. That's right! You can choose a slice of any flavor of pie you'd like and we will create an amazing concoction for you! Fancy an apple pie shake? How about a slice of peach pie in your cup of blended goodness? Cherry almond, blueberry lemon, marionberry, banana cream, coconut cream...honestly, there are so many flavors to choose from you could have a different shake every day of the week.

So come on over, pick out a slice and let us create a shake for you that your taste buds will thank you for!

*Super thanks to the Seattle Met Nosh Pit for the mention!*

We *heart* TV!

Wow, what a weekend! We kicked it off on Friday with the Food Network filming at High 5 Pie! On camera, we made our famous Lemon Shaker pie (a weekend fave) and Cherry Almond Cutie Pies. They also got shots of the Coconut Cream Pie (another crowd fave), Chocolate Cream Pie, Marionberry, Vanilla Cream, Peanut Butter Chocolate, and more! The show will be a one hour special on pies to air in November.....we can't wait!

The weekend has continued with pies flyin' out the door almost as fast as we make them...we love it! Today is gray and rainy, but it is a perfect day for coffee and pie. Doesn't a warm slice of apple pie with locally made vanilla bean ice cream sound just perfect?!

Special thanks to the Food Network Crew for being awesome, and our Lead Baker Anna for stealing the show...

...In Which We Keep Looking Forward.

Because really, why look back?

The winds of change have blown through here at High 5, unleashing a Pievolution and creating a hunger not only in our bellies, but in our hearts. Fillings were put under the microscope, tweaked, tasted, shared, talked about, tweaked again and married with our even-better-than-before dough. Talk about a match made in heaven! No really, let's talk about it ;)

These last few weeks at High 5 have been a wonderful journey. Challenging yes, but wonderful nonetheless. We can't tell you how great it feels to roll out changes and get back the response we've been receiving from the most important group of people: Our amazing customers. We went through some incredibly humbling times, listened to feedback, had some trial and error and then a breakthrough that wouldn't have been possible if we didn't have the best customers on the planet.

Thank YOU, Jennings Family! We hope Kitty left you some ;)!

You make our bakers so happy with tweets like these! It tells us that we're doing something right and that we are headed in a great direction. Not only do our bakers appreciate your feedback, but our baristas do as well!

Rockstar baristas, another one of our specialties.

This is why we do what we do. Because we love pie and love sharing it with people. We love talking about it, sharing secrets, trying new things and making something for you to share with loved ones. So from the bottom of our pie-loving hearts, thank you so much. YOU are the reason we are here, why we keep on evolving and why we have no plans on going anywhere but up!

Pievolution isn't over. It's just beginning.

Cheers!

...In Which I Get Sappy for a Minute

So I'm not sure if you've heard, but there's a Pievolution happening today. Well, I guess you could say it's been happening for weeks, but today is the unveiling. The unveiling of weeks of trial and error, blood, sweat and tears and fierce commitment from the best group of people I've ever had the pleasure to be around and work with.

A few of my team members in their natural habitat.

You see, I joined the High 5 family over the summer at a time when I really needed a change. Well, not only a change but I needed something good to happen. I was looking for something fun and challenging, something I could put myself into and be proud of. My good friend Angeleana called me on a Saturday wondering if I was still looking for work and if I'd be interested in a part time job at High 5 Pie, making and baking and delivering pie treats to cafe's around Seattle. Um hello?? Of course I was interested, it's pie! Not only that but she had talked about her job before and it was one of those things where I would find myself completely filled with jealousy while listening to her. You could tell she loved her job and I wanted that too. Within days I met Dani and the rest of the High 5 team and found myself in the position that I thought would never happen. I had a job that I loved. Not many people can say that so I counted myself as one of the lucky ones.

Who wouldn't be proud to make treats like these?

So fast forward a few months and we were opening our own bakery in a beautiful space in Capitol Hill, hiring more team members and adding to our menu. A retail shop along with our wholesale business meant we'd be busier than ever. There was a lot of transition, a lot of learning and yep, some speed bumps along the way. We gained team members and watched some move on, got some great reviews and some rather lackluster ones, tried new things and succeeded...and as hard as it was to try something and fail, we did it anyway and we learned from it. I'm telling you, I've never met a group with so much heart.

I now find myself in the position of being a leader for my team and it is by far one of the biggest honors I've had in my life. This team cares so much about who we are and what we do that I've watched them pull together in these last weeks and offer help and support wherever it was needed. They come in every day with smiles on their faces and good energy and pour themselves into everything they do and I find that to be extremely commendable.

So we find ourselves here today, Pievolution day, and we serve up weeks of hard work and dedication and hope that you can taste, smell, see and feel all the love that has been poured into these amazing pies...and we hope you love them as much as we do. We thank all of you so much for sticking with us through these changes, being excited for us and giving us feedback when it's needed. We wouldn't have been able to do any of this without all of you and that support.

And to my awesome team: Dani, Anna, Angeleana, Stacy, Matt, Rachel, Addy, Iris, Kelsey and Ryan, you guys are amazing. Thank you so much for all your hard work and dedication. I am so lucky to be a part of this team.

Viva!

Cheers!

Brave New World.

Hello, friends.

The winds of Spring are blowin’ outside, and the fresh winds of change are blowin’ through High 5 Pie.

And our changes, they feel good. They smell good. They’re tasting ohhh sooo good. Indeed, there was a catalyst that nudged us towards change. What catalyst? Nahhh. The “what” is inconsequential. The important thing is that we got the push we needed to roll out the recipe tweaks we’ve played with for a while.

Before, we weren’t sure if you, our patrons, wanted recipe tweaks, you know? We have a particular pie style here at High 5: fruit forward, and not too sweet. But as our business has grown from a few pies in a cake stand at Fuel to our very own High 5 Pie store front (!), and our fan base has grown (@high5pie loves hearing from pie lovers on Twitter and Facebook -- seriously makes our day ), our constructive feedback file has also bulked up. And we listen. We’ve always listened. We will always listen. The internal pie clock doesn’t get us out of bed at 3am every day to bake pies for ourselves, after all! Pie comes from the heart. Pie is for sharing.

So, we’ve tried out some recipes with friends and trusted palates across the food industry. (Note: Heather Earnhardt, you are an ambrosial goddess! All hail Volunteer Park Cafe.) A tweak of technique here, some extra butter there (we could all use more “light ‘n’ flaky” in the crust of our lives), a general all-over refinement of the basics.

Without further adieu, ladies and gentlemen of the pie-eating persuasion, we’d like to announce.......

High 5‘s Pievolution!

At this writing, we’ve overhauled the crust four ways. Our fruits are more robust. Our flavors are deeper. We’re feeling mmmm mmm good.

Stay tuned! We’re super excited. We’re all so in love with pie in general, and now even more in love with our own. We’re working super fast to nail down our changes and bring the best pies in the city out of our bakery and into your bellies. We can’t wait to fully unleash the #pievolution!

Viva!

Truly,
Dani Cone

High 5's Bakery Manager gets some well-deserved praise!

We would be nothing without our beloved baker manager, Cat Wilcox. Seattlest took a moment to ask Cat a few questions about how she got to this point in her life, and what inspires her...

"According to High 5 Pie owner Dani Cone, "when it comes to pie, everyone has a story." For Cat Wilcox, that story took place outside Portland, when she visited an uncle at the age of nine or ten. The South Texas native visited a U-pick blueberry farm on the outskirts of town, where she was introduced to a magical world where she could pick and eat blueberries on the spot, and then take them home to make a fresh fruit pie. "The only farms in the south are cotton farms," she says. Today, Wilcox is the bakery manager at High 5 Pie; she need only take a bus or quick stroll to get her hands on fresh fruits and vegetables for the dozens of pies she helps create.
Wilcox grew up in Corpus Christi, where she spent most of her life baking for fun. "My mother wasn't a cook, so I remember making pies for Thanksgiving," she explains. Since no real fruit orchards exist in Texas, Wilcox doesn't have any recollections of eating any fruit pies as a child, even the American favorite, apple."
